Scott Wendland Retires

After more than 37 years of dedicated service, we honor the retirement of a firefighter whose commitment to the Loretto Fire Department and later the West Suburban Fire District has left a lasting impact on the community.

Serving his entire career in Loretto, he held many leadership and support roles, including Lieutenant, Captain, and Chief 5, along with nearly 25 years as Gambling Manager, Treasurer of the Relief Association, Board Trustee, and active service during the Hamel merger. His work behind the scenes helped strengthen the department and ensure its long-term success.

To him, the fire department was more than a job — it was a second family. He often reflected on the way firefighters came together the moment the pager sounded, setting aside personal challenges to serve others with professionalism and courage.

One of his proudest accomplishments was helping preserve the department as an independent nonprofit organization, believing deeply in a member-driven fire service that values balance between service, family, and work.

As he enters retirement, he looks forward to slowing down, spending time with his grandchildren, and enjoying life beyond the pager- content knowing he made a meaningful difference without ever seeking the spotlight.

We thank him for his decades of faithful service and wish him the very best in retirement. Thank you for your service Scott!
