The West Suburban Fire District, formerly the Loretto Volunteer Fire Department, the Hamel Volunteer Fire Department, and the Maple Plain Fire Department, is built on a long-standing tradition of protecting and serving our communities.
On July 1, 2023, the Loretto and Hamel departments officially merged, marking a significant milestone in a shared commitment to provide prompt, professional, and effective fire protection services. The merged department, now known as the West Suburban Fire District, is led by experienced fire service professionals from both departments.
Effective January 1, 2026, the Maple Plain Fire Department—an organization with a proud history of faithful service to its community—joined the West Suburban Fire District. This addition strengthens the district’s ability to serve the region while honoring the legacy, service, and community roots of Maple Plain’s fire department.
West Suburban Fire District is a paid on-call department, with all training and department events compensated, and a retirement pension available in recognition of years of service.
Residents and businesses can expect continued excellence in fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous material response, and fire prevention programs.
The district operates stations in Loretto, downtown Hamel, and Maple Plain, and functions as a combination department led by a full-time Fire Chief and supported by dedicated paid on-call firefighters.
